About The Brand
New Page 1

Guccio Gucci, the founder of the Gucci Label, was born in Born in 1881. He was a Florentine dishwasher turned leather merchant who began selling leather travel bags. The family business prospered with their signature use of a flawed leather process called " cuoio grasso ." The process left the leather with a ruffled surface and ultimately the world came to recognize the double G logo superimposed on top of the leather as the brand of Gucci.

The Gucci House started initially as a saddlery shop in Florence in 1906. Guccio was a true craftsman who had a talent for leather goods. Guccio started selling leather bags to horsemen in the 1920’s and morphed into luxury luggage for his clients when the transition came from horse and buggy to horseless carriages. 1938 was the year Guccio Gucci opened the family's first retail shop on the Via Condotti in Rome.

Truly a  brand with a rich history, in the upcoming years the world would be introduced to a few Gucci staple trademarks: 1947 brought the immediately recognizable Gucci icon, the leather bag with bamboo handle while the 50’s would bring along the ubiquitous trademarked red striped webbing which actually first saw the light of day on a saddle girth.

The 1960’s brought increased fame to the Gucci Empire. Gucci's passing in 1953 did nothing to slow down the brand. The world was in love with the Gucci family. Hollywood embraced Gucci and made the name synonymous with "chic." Names like Grace Kelly, Peter Sellers and Audrey Hepburn did the brand wonders while Jackie Kennedy's Gucci shoulder bag introduced the world to the " Jackie-O " which became from that time forward the name Gucci adopted for the bag.

The 90’s would mark a huge turn for the Gucci name under the executive direction of Tom Ford. Tom Ford brought Gucci back to ground zero: their roots of being chic. Gucci, now at the center of chic, commands such a varied line of products which includes leather fashions, perfumes, colognes, cosmetics, shoes, suitcases, watches, jewelry, silk scarves, sports articles, belt clasps, ties, and eyeglasses to name a few.
